She’s late. But what’s five minutes. The doors automatically breathe apart and Jennifer steps into the store.

‘What are you going to sing for us?’

‘Well, Cheryl, it’s a song I think you might recognise, it’s one of yours.’

Sometimes Jennifer just knows how Cheryl feels. She knew, possibly even before Cheryl knew, that she was going to put Katie through to the next round. But then Jennifer had always thought that there had to be some Siamese-twin style bond between them. You know, like you read about in Now magazine, separated at birth but still feeling each other’s pain despite hundreds of miles of sea and land between them. That is Jennifer and Cheryl.

The tips of Jennifer’s fingers are moist from her cocoa butter hand-cream. It makes the buttons of the keyboard on the cash-desk smell sickly Lionel Dobbs complains.

This short story compilation ranges from heart-warming comedy to ruminations on existence: from the bizarre to the eerily macabre. See weird and wonderful preserved exhibits in a dusty old museum, immerse yourself in the conversation at a dinner party, or step foot into Dr Grost’s office. This remarkable, thirteen-story collection, introduces a huge variety of engaging characters and showcases Ward’s trademark style and humour.

Just in time for Christmas, this collection provides nuggets of fiction perfect for escaping. These thirteen stories showcase Giles Ward’s brilliantly dark sense of humour along with his striking writing style.
